The word API sounds technical, but the idea is simple. An API is a way for two programs to talk to each other.
An example
Think of a waiter in a restaurant. You (one system) give your order to the waiter (the API), who passes it to the kitchen (the other system) and brings back your food. You do not need to know how the kitchen works.
Why it is handy
